Workshop Details

Our dynamic, collaborative VaSCL ELA Institute is designed to empower educators in grades 3-12 to deepen knowledge and understanding of the 2024 Virginia English SOLs. The intention of the VaSCL ELA institute is to respond to the emerging needs of educators in the field with up-to-date resources, continuous professional support and best practices in English and Language Arts instruction. We will provide opportunities to focus on planning using backwards design; identifying skills and aligning assessment with instruction, all while embedding strategies that help to develop skilled readers and strengthen foundational skills.

Participants will collaborate within grade bands in order to:

  • Unpack the foundational skills within the 2024 Virginia ELA Standards of Learning.
  • Strategize to stack complementary skills from the 2024 Virginia ELA Standards of Learning that honor a comprehensive approach to instruction.
  • Team to discuss and build innovative assessment ideas that help collect evidence of student learning according to both the content and rigor of the 2024 Virginia ELA Standards of Learning.
  • Design integrated learning experiences for students around English & Language Arts skills with a focus on developing skilled readers and foundational skills.
  • Complete their experience with a clear path forward to implementing the 2024 Virginia ELA Standards of Learning into their planning communities and classrooms.

Our top-notch English/Language Arts institute staff will facilitate 2-3 person division/school teams to extend their expertise and support continued professional learning for educators implementing the new Math SOLS and aligning assessments, instruction, and pacing in your schools. We encourage that teams include coaches, specialists, department or team leaders who have responsibility for implementing elementary, middle, and/or high school math SOLs. Participants will leave the Institute ready to share information, strategies, and resources with educators in grades 3-12 in their respective divisions and/or schools.

Recertification Certificate

Recertification Certificates (6 points) will be given at the end of the PD workshop series after completion of an electronic exit survey.
