Workshop Details

 Join the amazing math facilitator team of Dr. Deb Crawford and Dr. Holly Tate for a dynamic webinar series designed to help math teachers use the Eight Math Teaching Practices to adeptly design, instruct, and assess learning to support all learners to meet the 2023 Virginia math standards. Participants will gain and extend valuable skills and engage with colleagues to apply these practices in the classroom. You will leave with a renewed sense of confidence as you break down and use adaptable approaches to implement evidence-based math practices in your classroom that align with the rigorous thinking and complex content knowledge that students are expected to demonstrate. The Eight Mathematical Practices that will be the focus of the webinar series are:

  1. Establish Clear Mathematics Goals to Focus Instruction and Support Student Learning
  2. Implement Rich Tasks that Promote Reasoning and Problem-Solving and Engage Learners in Meaningful Mathematics
  3. Use and Connect Mathematical Representations to Help Learners Make Sense of Concepts through Models, Strategies, and Symbols
  4. Facilitate Meaningful Mathematical Discourse by Encouraging Student Thinking through Mathematical Conversation
  5. Pose Purposeful Questions that Provoke Mathematical Thinking and Extend Understanding
  6. Build Procedural Fluency from Conceptual Understanding that Supports Accuracy and Efficiency with Deep Understanding
  7. Support Productive Struggle In Learning Mathematics by Creating a Safe Environment where Effort Leads to Growth
  8. Elicit and Use Evidence of Student Thinking to Inform Instruction and Advance Learning

Presenters

Deb Crawford

Dr. Deb Crawford is the Coordinator of Secondary Mathematics for Frederick County Public Schools. She serves as a facilitator with the Data Science Virginia team, chairs the Shenandoah Valley CS Regional Partnership, and teaches in the Mathematics Education Leadership concentration at George Mason University’s Graduate School of Education. A past president of VCMS, she is currently co-PI of the GMU/Frederick Data Science & Computing Lab School. She co-authored a book chapter in Navigating Issues of Equity in PK-12 Schools Through Research-Practice Partnerships: Stories From the Field. Over her career, Deb has also proudly served as a mathematics teacher, department chair, and instructional coach in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Texas.

Holly Tate

Dr. Holly Tate is a mathematics education leader in Northern Virginia. She currently serves as an instructional mathematics coach in Fairfax County Public Schools, president of the Virginia Council of Mathematics Specialists, and an adjunct professor for George Mason University. Dr. Tate is also a proud graduate of George Mason University, where she completed her Ph.D. with dual specializations in Mathematics Education Leadership and Research Methodologies. She is particularly passionate about elevating the work of teachers as researchers and creating equity-centered spaces for elementary children. She has authored several book chapters for Corwin Mathematics and TODOS, and co-authored research and practitioner journal articles. Dr. Tate enjoys presenting at international, national, state, and local conferences. In her fifteenth year in education, her favorite part of her work is continued learning and collaboration alongside colleagues, teachers, and students.

Workshop Series Cost

The workshop fee is $175 for each participant who is a member of a school division that is a member of VaSCL. You can check here for member divisions.

The registration fee for participants from Non-Member school divisions is $225.

If you would like to pay now by credit card or through a PayPal/credit account, you will be given an opportunity to do so below.

If payment is not made by credit card/PayPal account at registration, the person whom you identified as the Billing Contact will be sent an invoice for payment of your registration fee.

Refund Policy

VaSCL has a no refund policy for workshop registrations.

We are happy to allow a substitute to attend in your place. Allison will need to know the person’s name and email address for confirmation.
