Workshop Details

Our dynamic, collaborative VaSCL ELA Institute is designed to empower 3-12 educators to deepen knowledge of the current ELA SOL revisions, including the new VDOE Instructional Guides by grade levels as well as use of data to drive instruction. The intention of the VaSCL ELA Institute is to respond to the emerging needs of educators in the field with up-to-date resources, continuous professional support and accessible math resources. Educators should bring data sources to use in analysis of current instructional and assessment strategy and practices to ensure real-time and ongoing alignment to levels of rigor embedded in new standards and test formats.

There will be two webinars in January and February (dates TBD) as follow up to this session.

Participants will:

  • Unpack the big ideas of the content, process skills in practice, concepts, and connections.
  • Plan how to use balanced assessments to measure evidence of growth and proficiency of each standard.
  • Leave with the VaSCL balanced assessment map for new SOL ELA content.
  • Design the learning experiences for students in the content using VDOE resources.
  • Finish the day with a renewed sense of confidence in the revisions and adaptable approaches to assess content for learning in your classroom and in your work to support fellow educators in your school and division!

We encourage divisions to consider sending a team of 2 - 3 people to this day-long institute who in turn can share information and resources back to their respective divisions and/or schools. Team members might  include coaches, specialists, department or team leaders who have responsibility for implementing elementary, middle, and/or high school math SOLs.
