Workshop Details

This session offers participants a deep dive into the elements of effective literacy instruction in grades 3-6. Current research on the Science of Reading identifies the following components as necessary areas of focus in impactful literacy instruction: phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. A brief overview of phonological awareness and phonics will be offered, as these are foundational to the development of skilled readers. The majority of the session will focus on effective methods of teaching reading fluency, vocabulary and comprehension in the intermediate grades.

Recertification Certificate

Recertification Certificates (5 points) will be given at the end of the PD workshop series after completion of an electronic exit survey.

Dr. Courtneay Kelly

Dr. Courtneay (Corrie) Kelly is an Associate Professor of Literacy Education at MaryMount. Prior to earning her Ed.D. in Curriculum & Instruction at the University of Virginia, she enjoyed working as a literacy/RtI specialist in Albemarle County Schools. Her current research projects focus on effective practices in literacy instruction, Universal Design for Learning as a framework for differentiating lessons, and trauma-sensitive instructional practices.

Workshop Series Cost

The workshop fee is $149 for each participant who is a member of a school division that is a member of VaSCL. You can check here for member divisions.

The registration fee for participants from Non-Member school divisions is $199.
